March 6, 2020, Sterling, Colo. — Day two of the Region IX began with the Gillette College (GC) Pronghorns and the Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) Mustangs in the first semi-final game. The Pronghorns defeated Otero as the Mustangs defeated McCook in their first round matchups.
The game began with Gillette jumping out to an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes of play. The next five minutes were all WWCC as they stymied the Pronghorns and took the 27-18 lead. They kept that energy and extended their lead going into halftime 47-34. In the second half, the Mustangs continued their trend of attacking and held the 64-51 lead with 12 minutes remaining in the game. Gillette never panicked and and battled back to bring the game within two, 66-64 advantage WWCC. With their seasons on the line, both teams picked up the physicality on both ends of the floor. The Mustangs prevailed and advance with an 87-74 victory.
Leading the Mustangs with 19 points each were Sindou Cisse and LeChaun Duhart. The Pronghorns were led by Jayden Coke with 16 points.
The Mustangs move on to the Region IX Championship game and will play the winner of the Northeastern and Western Nebraska game. Championship game set at 7:00 PM tomorrow.
