Northeastern Softball Takes Down Western Nebraska For The Third Time in Three Games 16-13
DDC Player of the Game, Kelsi Jurczewsky collected three hits in five at bats, as Norhteastern defeated Western Nebraska 16-13 on Saturday at Scottsbluff. Jurczewsky singled in the first inning, singled in the second inning, and singled in the seventh inning.
Bats blistered as the Plainswomen collected 15 hits and WNCC 13 in the high-scoring game.
Northeastern got on the board in the top of the first inning after Jurczewsky singled down the right field line, and the Cougars committed an error, each scoring one run.
Western Nebraska made the score 4-2 in the bottom of the first after an error scored two runs, Emma Murdock singled, scoring one run, and Alyssa Albaugh grounded out, scoring one run.
Northeastern jumped back into the lead in the top of the second inning after Ryann Mergelman doubled to center field, Marisa Reyes hit a sacrifice fly, Jurczewsky singled down the left field line, and America Griffin grounded out, each scoring one run.
The Plainswomen added to their early lead in the top of the third inning when an error scored one run, and Reyes tripled, scoring two runs.
The Cougars scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ellie Soper tripled, scoring two runs, Tina Horton singled, scoring one run, and Abbey Arntsen singled, scoring two runs.
Reyes started the game for Northeastern. The starting pitcher allowed nine hits and 10 runs (zero earned) over six innings, striking out four and walking two. Horton began the game for Western Nebraska. The pitcher allowed one hit and one run (zero earned) over two-thirds of an inning, striking out none and walking none. Maddie Cline appeared in relief for NJC.
Northeastern tallied 15 hits in the game. Brodie Wilcoxen, Mergelman, and Jurczewsky each collected three hits for NJC. Reyes went 2-for-3 at the plate and led the team with three runs batted in. Addison Steele collected two hits for Northeastern in five at bats. Mikey Llamas and Jurczewsky each stole multiple bases for NJC. NJC ran wild on the base paths, piling up six stolen bases for the game. NJC turned one double play in the game.
