Northeastern Softball Takes Back-to-Back Victories Over Luna Community College, Winning Game Two 17-1

DDC Player of the Game, America Griffin drove in four runs on three hits to lead Northeastern past Luna 17-1 on Saturday. Griffin singled in the first scoring two, hit a home run to left field in the second scoring two, and singled in the third scoring one.

Luna were the first to get on the board in the first when Encinias singled, scoring one run.

Northeastern flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the first, scoring seven runs on five hits to take the lead, 7-1. The biggest blow in the inning was a double by Kelsi Jurczewsky that drove in two.

The Plainswomen scored five runs on six hits in the bottom of the second inning. Griffin homered to left field, scoring two runs, Ryann Mergelman singled, scoring one run, and Brodie Wilcoxen singled, scoring two runs.

Northeastern added to their early lead in the bottom of the third inning after Griffin singled to center field, Luna committed an error, Mergelman singled down the left field line, Wilcoxen singled down the left field line, and Luna committed an error, each scoring one run.

Brook McNeil earned the win for Northeastern. The hurler allowed three hits and one run over four innings, striking out none and walking none. Chavez started in the circle for Luna. The starting pitcher allowed 16 hits and 17 runs (nine earned) over four innings, striking out three and walking two. Maddie Cline threw one inning of no-run ball for Northeastern in relief. The hurler surrendered zero hits, striking out one and walking none.

The Plainswomen piled up 16 hits in the game. Wilcoxen, Madison Birt, and Griffin each collected three hits for NJC. Wilcoxen and Griffin each drove in four runs for NJC. Mergelman collected two hits for NJC in three at bats. Mikey Llamas stole two bases. NJC ran wild on the base paths, accumulating three stolen bases for the game.
